Fossil forest discovery

A massive fossil forest has been discovered in mines in Illinois in the USA.

The trees have been found in the rooves of coal mines and show spectacular root systems and collosal trunks.

The trees were found in Upper Carboniferous rocks more than 300 million years old and represent a time when much of the area was covered in swampy forest.

Thankfully, you don’t have to go to the US to find these amazing fossils, we have them right here in Manchester! A fossil tree from the same age rocks was found near Bradford in 1886 and soon after was transferred to the Manchester Museum. It was described as the finest specimen ever discovered. Arguably it still is.

This incredible specimen helps set the scene of a lush forest that covered much of Britain at this time.
