Volcanoes erupt at Manchester Museum!

We recently discovered an amazing collection of over 80 photos of volcanoes, earthquakes and alpine glaciers in the palaeontology stores.

The pictures detail the eruption of Vesuvius and the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Not only do they show the disruption caused by the lava and earth movements, but also the affect of these disasters on the local population. The people seem little disturbed by a lava flow in the street!

Little is known about Jonathan Barnes who collected these images.

The Alchemy artist Ilana Halperin discovered the images as part of her research into the collection. The images formed part of her exhibition at the museum last year.

See the Flickr page for more images.
