New Manchester Gallery opens!

The Manchester Gallery Environment display

The Manchester Gallery Environment display

Our fantastic new Manchester Gallery opens on Saturday the 4th of April. It is packed full of interesting stories about Manchester many of which are about fossils.

The gallery follows five themes: environment, industry, collectors, the Victorian museum, and journeys. It uses objects from the collections to tell previously hidden stories.

A massive bison skull gives a window into Manchester during the last Ice Age and red deer antlers found when they were digging the Manchester Ship Canal are on display for the first time. One of my favourite stories is about one of our collectors called Alfred Paneth. He was Jewish and escaped from Nazi Germany just before the Second World War. His passion was collecting amber which is now on display for the first time.

Come and have a look and find out more about these amazing objects!
