I thought I’d bring a bit of bling for my first post of 2011. Happy new year everyone!

Just before Christmas I came across  some presentation boxes  in the mineral store which had the name De Beers on the top. As you might imaging I was quite excited!

Unfortunately, they are not real diamonds, but glass copies of some of the world’s most famous diamonds and their cuts. There are about 15 in all. They are really stunning in their own right and much more meaningful than just looking at a picture. And where would you ever get these gemstones together?

There is an interesting history with most of these diamonds. The Star of the South and the Regent were mixed up in slavery, royalty and of course vast amounts of money.

We have a small collection of real diamonds at the museum, perhaps not as spectacular as the world’s finest, but interesting all the same.
