Flexible sandstone

Here’s one of my favorite strange objects from the collection.

  1. When I was a naive young assistant in the 1980’s I was shown some “flexible sandstone” by one of the geology curators who, with a deadpan face, told me that it was used as a building material in earthquake zones – being flexible it withstood shaking! He did put us right, after a while.
    During “behind the scenes” tours it was one of the star items to show visitors – but without the earthquake story attached.
